Blantyre: Malawi  President Peter Mutharika has said that fighting corruption is one of the top priorities of his government.

Mutharika was speaking during the commemorations of the International Anti-corruption Day at Chisitu in Mulanje district.

The International Anti-corruption day was set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it.

The day falls on 9 December every year but in Malawi commemorations took place on 17 December.

Mutharika said corruption is the worst enemy to the country as it denies people their right to good health, learning resources for schools, and construction of roads among others.

“The fight against corruption is one of the top priorities of my government and we will continue fighting corruption until it gets to zero,” said Mutharika.

He further said that the day should renew the country’s commitment to fighting corruption and he said this year’s theme, “Patriotism key to fighting corruption” is in line with national pillars.

“This year’s theme is in line with the country’s pillars which is patriotism and citizens who are patriotic cannot engage in corruption,” he said.

He added that his government is reforming the financial system and it is cultivating a culture of patriotism, integrity, and hard work as corruption is also a moral problem.
