Malawi: Controversial Traditional Authority (T/A) Bvumbwe of Thyolo has died, Malawi’s Ministry of Local government says.

Bvumbwe, died Wednesday at Adventist hospital in Blantyre aged 36.

He had hit headlines after he publicly attacked former President, Joyce Banda during Judge Joseph Manyungwa’s funeral ceremony in 2013.

He attacked Banda and the then ruling Peoples Party (PP) for giving its party supporters the party T-Shirt despite the event being a sorrowful one, attacking Banda for politicizing the ceremony.

He was installed in October 2001 by the then president Bakili Muluzi.

In 2013, he courted controversy when he annoyed the then president Joyce Banda for the remarks he made at Judge Joseph Manyungwa’s funeral in Thyolo.

“I want to say what has happened here. Your boys were distributing T-shirts. This is bad and degrading. It should never happen again. This should never happen again, if you want, hold a rally and distribute the T-shirts there,”. he said these remarks amid murmurs and shame on PP officials.

It was after this that he kept receiving death threats and was reported to have gone into hiding.

He is survived by a wife and two daughters Monica and Desire.T/A Bvubwe
