Lilongwe, Malawi:A local political commentator says there are all signs that the country has not yet healed from divisions that followed the May tripartite poll results and warns this could be receipt for disaster.

The remarks by Joseph Chunga of Chancellor College come following Thursday’s meeting between President Peter Mutharika and leaders of opposition political parties at Sanjika palace in Blantyre.

There have been mixed reactions over Mutharik’s unexpected offer to meet opposition leaders and deliberate over unity issues among others.

According to Chunga, a number of political differences that erupted during and after the May 20 polls remain unresolved.

He cited that debate over other issues like federalism is an obvious sign that there is yet a lot to be done by political leaders to reconcile Malawians.

“When you follow debates like federalism and power sharing, some political issues are not addressed yet in the country. These issues should be addressed and resolved once and for all,” he said.

He could however not rush to commend president Mutharika’s effort to create a platform for his contender during the May 20th saying there is need to monitor if it was done in good faith.

“The initiative (by President Mutharika) may be welcome, but we have not yet institutionalized such a culture that such forums between president and opposition meeting in that way as a country, this is unusual.”

“People may have reasons to be skeptical. This may be basically a political move and it yet to be seen if these talks would mean anything,” he said.

Recently during national prayers organized by the Public Affairs committee PAC in Lilongwe, UN resident coordinator Mia Seppo urged authorities to urgently address emerging differences among both the political leadership and all people if the country is to develop
