Malawi: Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati has called upon women politicians in higher positions to help fellow women as a way of increasing women’s representation in decision making positions.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Thursday when she opened a two day stakeholders reflections meeting on the 50:50 campaign, Kaliati said the meeting provided a platform to assess what has been and what needs to be done to ensure success of the plan.

She said for any assessment, there has to be indicators that would show if progress is being made or not and the number of women who contested and won in the May 20 Tripartite Elections is one such indicator.

“In our case the indicators range from numbers of women who contested, numbers of who made it, numbers of women who were not successful, the numbers of voters who received the message about 50:50 campaign and the support we received from well-wishers and partners.

“We have achieved something but we are not satisfied and we have strong passion to break the barriers.” she added

On challenges faced in implementing the 50:50 campaign, Kaliati said the target audience was not cleared defined, campaign messages were generic and women contestants lacked resources to last the duration of the campaign period.

Kaliati explained that her ministry will do everything possible to ensure that the challenges should be history and that Malawi should have a welcoming environment for all aspiring women politicians, even though it is not an easy task to achieve.

The minister called upon political parties to assess their structures and policies to ensure that they are gender sensitive and decentralize the message to district offices and local levels where most women faced resistance to during the primary elections towards the 20 may tripartite elections.

She also urges traditional leaders who were present to assist in overcoming patriarchal attitude among the population that a woman cannot be a leader.

Out of the 261 women candidates who contested in the May 20 Tripartite Elections, only 32 made it representing 12%.

The conference has brought together traditional leaders, women Members of Parliament and councilors including those that failed to win. Others stakeholders taking part in the meeting are United Nations, Royal Norwegian Embassy and NGO Gender Coordination Network.
