Malawi: Much has been said about the elections we had in May 2014, most of it is negative. The issue seems to be some opposition parties think the results were stolen. It is quite difficult to substantiate this no matter how fair one wants to be. The rigging story has been and it is wearing itself out now! The latest I have heard is that Ex- President Joyce Banda is saying that she had to let go of the election results because she feared that Malawians would go to the streets!

Well, I was in Malawi as I related in one of my previous articles when the elections were done and personally I feel despite it’s problems Malawi did very well at such a difficult time. I am certain there was no stealing and no rigging. Rigging had been attempted but it had been stopped prematurely. Counting was done as well as was possible. If as a Malawian I have a complaint it is to say may we have more efficient electronic systems in place for the next election, so there is less delays and breakdowns like this last one.

When our ex President says she had to let go to avoid Malawi exploding! I feel embarrassed watching it! she said this in USA and she recently repeated it in South Africa. I have tried to be fair and looked at what she is saying objectively; people will protest if they have a leader elected who they did not want elected; people would also protest if they feel that they deserved to win or their party rather deserved to win and it did not. I think Joyce Banda is referring to the latter! It really is pitiful! she was the incumbent President and she became third in the elections! No. 3! What I also heard was that in fact those that wanted to protest on her behalf quickly withdrew when they heard that there were proof documents to show attempts at rigging by PP. Time has come to recognize that Malawians are moving with the time and they cannot be blinded!Let alone the world!Joyce Banda! A leader who wants this job has to remain transparent and honest with Malawians!I am so concerned that Joyce Banda is not even honest with herself and I am wondering how the future of the party she based so much on hatred is going to pan out? I would have thought after the elections she would have done a little bit of self SWOT analysis and decided to change as necessary but she continues with lies and delusions of grandeur!!My take on this is that if had got back into power people would have rioted because she was not wanted!!

There is another facet to the elections being debated in the country; the business of what the definition of majority, in as much as who wins the elections, should mean. While I understand what is bothering those that say Peter Mutharika was elected by only 36% of the country and now he is leading the country, I personally feel this is the fault of the system. The present system makes that 36% the majority! So Peter has aright to go ahead and become President!I have no objection to revising the constitution so that majority should be defined as above 50%. However, we have to be crystal clear what we are saying. If we want democracy i.e. as many presidential candidates as we want then we have no other way but to accept that will fragment the vote; in so doing yes you will end up with leaders who have lest than half the total vote ruling the country because this is a feature of this system. If we want to define majority as being more than 50% then we have to change our system to narrow the number of parties standing for presidency down to two. It is only when two forces are competing that we know whether the man who wins the vote is liked by more than 50% of the voters or not.
