Malawi: Malawi will host a Broadband meeting for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) from August 14 to 16. According to the Malawi Communications and Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Communications Officer Clara Mulonya, the event will look at strategies that would accelerate the provision of universal service or access in the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), especially the broadband technology.

Mulonya added that the meeting will review various applications utilizing broadband across all sectors like commerce, health and education.

“It will further look at the case of rural broadband deployment utilizing emerging applications such as television white space which is being piloted in a number of countries including Malawi,” she said.

She said Broadband was an essential service that allows for generation of new skills, social and economic growth and it is an enabler of technological changes across the entire economy and all development sectors.

In its ICT Infrastructure Master Plan 2012, SADC placed a roll out of the fibre to facilitate the achievement of its vision, Digital SADC by 2027.
