Mulanje, Malawi: Some farmers in Mulanje district south of Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre, now have the opportunity to venture into mechanized farming during the coming 2014/2015 growing season.

This follows the launch of a commercial tractor which will be available to farmers to use.

The District Agricultural Development Officer Sheila Kang’ombe said the tractor can be hired at K11, 000 per hectare for tilling and K7, 500 per hectare for ridging.

The tractor will also be hired for maize shelling at K50 per 50 Kilogram bag.

“The tractor is at the farmers’ disposal in liaison with Agricultural Extension Development Officers in their respective areas,” said Kang’ombe adding “Malawian farmers have tilled the soil for a long
time using hoes and it is high time they go mechanical”.

She said mechanical farming has proved to be effective as it reduces hard working in fields and is very helpful to those affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The DADO emphasized on the need for farmers to adopt new farming technologies they learn during agriculture shows.

“Agriculture shows create platforms for farmers to share their experiences and interact with extension workers and service providers in the agriculture industry, so it is very important for farmers to
attend the shows,” she said.

Parliamentarian for Mulanje Limbuli Daud Chida advised farmers to check the members of their families before selling their produce and he warned them to be cautious with unscrupulous traders who buy their produce at meager prices.
