Lilongwe, Malawi: Inline with government restructuring the Malawi government has issued a directive that from now on all women civil servants should not dance for the president and his vice. They will only be allowed to perform at public events that directly relate to their profession or organisation only or at an event to commemorate an anniversary or celebration of national or international significance. All women civil servants should be in offices working just like their male counter parts.

Even at such events, not all of them will have the opportunity to attend according to the statement.

According to the same statement, President Peter Mutharika has also directed that the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) be restructured by relocating some of its current functions to their relevant sectoral ministries to allow the OPC to concentrate on its core business of management of the public service and cabinet affairs.

Mutharika’s directive will see the Department of HIV/AIDS and Nutrition and the Safe Motherhood Initiative going to the Ministry of Health and the Presidential Initiative on Poverty and Hunger Reduction being relocated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.

Again, the National Registration Bureau, which is responsible for the National I.D. Project, will now fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs whereas the Office of the Director of Public Procurement will take the Government Contracting Unit from OPC.

During last campaign season, President Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) promised to bring some changes within the public sector and the announcement from the Civil Service and Public Service Reforms Commission is likely to be seen as walking the talk on the part of Mutharika and the ruling DPP.
