Lilongwe,Malawi: The Kingdom of Norway has funded the Malawian Government with US$17 million to help in improving access and quality of education for girls in Malawi.

The money is targeted to assist a programme to be implemented in selected schools in Dedza, Salima and Mangochi.

It is expected to run for three years and is supported by the United Nations through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Speaking during the launch of the programme at Nthulu Primary School, T/A Kaphuka in the district, the Prime Minister for Norway Erna Solberg said the Norwegian Government gives priority to girl education because it is one of the keys to eradicating poverty.

“Girls are the most marginalized in the society as such they meet a lot of challenges in life that makes them not to attain education. So this programmes is bringing in some initiatives to keep girls in school, for example sensitizing the communities on the benefits of education, particularly for girls,” said Solberg.

She further said the programme has also been implemented because the MDG Acceleration Framework-Malawi Action Plan (MAF- MAP) shows that Malawi is off track towards archiving the MDG2 on the three targets.

In her remarks, the Resident Coordinator for the United Nation (UN) Ms. Mia Seppo said that in order for Malawi to achieve quality education for girls there is need for the country to look into the age of Marriage Bill so that our girls should not get married at a tender age.

Among the high ranking officials present at the event were the some top officials of Norway, Malawi’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Dr George Chaponda and the Minister of Health Dr Jean Kalilani among others.
