Malawian civil society organisations (CSOs) are expected to submit an independent report on outstanding human rights abuses and concerns to United Nations for review from July 9 to 10.Centre for the Development of People (Cedep) executive director Gift Trapence told journalists in Lilongwe on Tuesday that the country’s report was an opportunity for the current administration of President Peter Mutharika to address the abuses and concerns without delay.

“We are taking to the UN issues like the plundering of public resources, the July 20 killings and (the) Access to Information Bill which previous administrations have not addressed,” he said.

He said the scandal involving the alleged plunder of public funds under Banda’s administration, a scam now commonly referred to as “Cashgate”, would be at the top of the agenda because “there is evidence that the theft had violated the rights of Malawians to access essential services.”

Malawi is a signatory to the International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights.
