Blantyre, Malawi: The high court in Malawi has rebuffed MEC and instructed  MEC to release results by Friday. No recounting should take placeas only Parliament can change laws. Judge Potani made the ruling.

MEC is scheduled to released official results today at  21:00 hours. Counting has ended at COMESA Hall in Blantyre with DPP’s Peter Mutharika leading. 

Meanwhile the US urges political heads and followers to exercise calm.

The United States government has advised the country’s political leaders and their followers to exercise restraint and remain peaceful amid the current waiting of the election official results.

The U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf in a statement has called upon political leaders and their followers to remain calm .

Harf says the United States is closely monitoring the situation in Malawi following the 20 May tripartite elections.

“The US government is urging all political leaders and their supporters to refrain from violence, and to resolve any disputes in a manner that adheres to Malawi’s laws and its constitution” says Harf in a statement.

Other members of the international community that have urged for peace include the United Nations, European Union, African Union among others.
