Lilongwe,Malawi: The current election saga has heavily affected the economy of the Malawi with business activities significantly slowed down in the past six days. Whoever assumes power will surely inherit a shattered economy.

Business has slowed down with a lot of civil servants glued to their televisions and radio waiting for election results.  Although there is peace in Malawi people are afraid of leaving their homes, most have decided  to stay at home and not go to work.

Employees and employers are cautious and anxious of the outcome of the elections which has been affected by a number of irregularities.

Most shops including in the commercial city of Blantyre, capital city Lilongwe and Northern Region city of Mzuzu did not open during the polling days from May 20-23.

Malawi Chamber of Commerce Confederation and Industries president Newton Kambala confirmed that the country was losing out.

“Business has slowed down and obviously the economy is being affected because we are losing forex,” Kambala said.

But he said the outcome of the elections would be critical to the economic development of the country.

“Of course people are anxious to have results released but we need the best result rather rushing through,” he said.
