Blantyre, Malawi:  The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has asked leaders of the opposition to wait for the official election results before declaring themselves winners.  Based on the unofficial results the race is between two opposition parties namely the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Joyce Banda’s Peoples party is trailing in third place

Unofficial results already announced by the accredited media houses, Zodiak Broadcasting Station and MBC Television indicate that despite a few challenges Malawians have voiced that they no longer want to be governed by a Joyce Banda, her party is trailing in third position and with very little parliamentary representation. Even her own running mate has lost a parliamentary seat to the opposition.

MEC Chairman Justice Maxon Mbendera, reading a statement jointly issued with all the stakeholders at the elections’ National Tally Center in Blantyre warned all the contestants against making premature declarations before his institution makes a determination.
