Malawi: Malawians are voting in a tight election, with President Joyce Banda facing three strong challengers. Elections have been marred with logistical problems and vote rigging claims.

Parliamentary and local elections are being held at the same time.

Voting has been delayed in parts of the largest city, Blantyre, Lilongwe and other rural areas. The delays are due to a shortage of election material and wrong materials being sent to wrong centers. In some case the presidential aspirants pictures do not appear on the voting cards.

The Malawi Elections committee has acknowledged and decided to extend voting hours. Mr Maxon Mbendera was quoted on a local radio station ” We accept challenges and therefore we have agreed to extend voting hour to 9 pm in all centers where voting was delayed”

The delays automatically rules out a lot of voters, There are reports of angry scenes at some polling stations. In Ndirande most voters haeve been rounded up by the police who have been called to provide security. Some voters are being sent home while MEC is claiming to re-open the voters center.

Analysts say that despite the race is too close to call and any of the four candidates can win.

The candidate with the most votes is declared the winner of the presidential race – there is no run-off.
