Blantyre, Malawi: Visually impaired Malawians will be given   tactile ballot guides (TBG)  inoder to ensure that they are able to vote just like any other Malawian. The Malawi electoral commission aims to accommodate all eligible Malawians .

Mr Sangwani Mwafulirwa who is the the director of media and public relations at MEC has said that it is MEC’s aim to ensure free and fair elections. Mwafulirwa added that apart from tactile ballot guides (TBG)  the organization has put deliberate measures such as placing voting booths in open flat ground to allow easy access, using adjustable booths, in order to assist the physically challenged, the elderly and pregnant mothers cast their votes without difficulties.

The Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) acting executive director, Action Amos said the development is welcome and one of the many factors that their organization has been lobbying for to ensure that people with disabilities are fully included in the affairs of the land.

“We are grateful to MEC for the development as this gives the visually impaired chance to participate fully in the May 20 tripartite election by casting their vote independently and in private as everyone else,” explained Amos.

With the tactile ballot guides assurance, FEDOMA continues to lobby for more rights of the disabled in the country, this time planning to engage the political parties as much as they can so that disability issues are mainstreamed in the next elected government.
