Lilongwe, Malawi: The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called on political parties in the country to practice civilized  and issue based campaign .

Justice Maxon Mbendera the MEC Chairperson said this in Blantyre during the official launch of 2014 Tripartite Elections campaign period.

Justice Mbendera said the commission is geared to see a free and fair elections, this should also be seen through out the campaign period.

“The message to political parties is let us pursue decent electioneering campaign and resist the temptations of violence.

“Political party followers should avoid songs or languages that are provocative in nature. Time has come for people to appreciate the power of their vote.

“Political parties should articulate agenda that reflect how society should be organized. The commission is geared to deliver credible, free and fair elections,” said Mbendera adding that it is only the best candidate who may win after the voting process.

Me Mbendera said the Malawi electoral commission will not allow politicians to produce hate speech and irresponsible campaign saying these are not part of the campaign.

The campaign period shall start from 21st March to 18 May, 2014.
