Lilongwe: The citizens of Malawi through the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Centre for Human for Development of People (Cedep) have expressed fears over government’s commitment on meeting of Parliament. Malawians go to the polls on the 20th May therefore the national assembly will be dissolved as laid out in the constitution. Section 67 (1) of the Republic of Malawi Constitution states: “The National Assembly shall stand dissolved on the 20th of March in the fifth year after its election, and the polling day for the general elections for the next National Assembly shall be the Tuesday in the third week of May that year.”

In a joint press statement, released yesterday, signed by CHRR Acting Executive Director, Timothy Mtambo and Cedep Executive Director, Gift Trapence, the two organisations are calling for the immediate February sitting of Parliament in order to deliberate on what they call two ‘matters of urgency’. Reads part of the statement:

“Baffled with reports that Parliament may only meet in April; mindful of the political games underlying the forensic report saga and conversant with Section 67 of the Constitution, we at CHRR and Cedep would like to renew our call for immediate meeting of Parliament to deliberate the cash-gate forensic report (which ought to be released forthwith) and the report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).”

The statement says that reports that government will call Parliament in April are at best incredible and questionable as we do not know which go.

“The continual and, oftentimes, needless shifting of dates for releasing the forensic report (whose Executive Summary got sent to IMF weeks ago) bespeaks the suspicious manner in which government is handling the whole saga.
