Malawi: Fichtner GmbH  a German based company, which won a tender to work as the main engineering consultant for the United States government funded US$350.7 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Power Sector Revitalization Project in Malawi, says the project is on track and that some construction work will start this year.

After a competitive bidding process, Fichtner GmbH was selected and on October 4 last year signed a five year contract agreement with Millennium Challenge Account-Malawi to, among other things, develop project designs, prepare tender documents for procuring contractor works as well as supervise contractors throughout the project period.

Fichtner GmbH Project Manager, Roland Neifer, says the project is right on track and that designs of all sub-projects commenced in November 2013.

“Each sub-project is currently in its design phase and Fichtner will follow international tendering procedures in the award of the supply and construction contracts as well as supervise their implementation,” said Neifer.

“The implementation of the sub-projects will commence in phases. Commencement of construction of some subprojects is expected later this year,” he added.

The sub-project, according to Neifer, include rehabilitation of Nkula A power station, the design of a 400 kV transmission line from southern Malawi to central Malawi and the upgrade of a plethora of transmission and distribution lines country wide.

He said the company is currently completing the study on the 400 kV transmission line from southern Malawi to central Malawi while the design of the Nkula A refurbishment, the natural resource management sub activity, including those for weed management, trash diversion structures and equipment, are going on well.

Explaining his company’s scope of work, Neifer said Fichner is assisting MCA-Malawi and the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) implement the identified projects to revitalize the energy sector.

He said the assignment has made Malawi one of the company’s main focus countries in Africa.

“We have established a project office in Malawi and assigned more than 30 experts to this project working partly from Malawi and partly from our home office in Stuttgart Germany,” he said.

Fichtner is Germany’s largest independent engineering consultancy enterprise with approximately 2,000 employees with an annual turnover of more than 260 million Euros.

It has been active for more than 40 years in Africa and its first involvement in Malawi dates back to 1983 when it was assigned to conduct a study on the national high voltage grid.

In the 1990s, Fichtner also assisted in the implementation of the Wovwe Hydro Power Plant in northern Malawi.

The company has successfully accomplished multi-million and billion euro capital investments in the energy sector worldwide and has been involved in more than 420 transmission and distribution projects world-wide.
