Thousands of civil servants from various government departments including nurses are yet to be paid, they have not received their January salaries yet..

Government has attributed the delays to system challenges amidst reports that the state has no money.

Reports from various districts across the country indicate that there are some civil servants who are still waiting to get their salaries although government, through the Ministry of Finance, is insisting that it has cleared all outstanding payments for January.

Treasury spokesperson Nations Msowoya, when asked about the persistent salary delays for civil servants, parried away assertions that the government was broke.

“These delays were not because the government did not have money but rather due to system challenges. There have been challenges posed by the cashgate which forced the government to suspend IFIMIS  in September 2013,” he explained.

He added: “This resulted in the transfer of people in and out of Accountant General’s office, some of whom were signatories of government cheques. Such developments contributed to delays in processing of salaries. These problems have now been addressed,” he said.

Msowoya maintained that government paid all civil servants their January salaries.

“Although civil servants salaries for January 2014 were delayed beyond January 27, which is the official pay date, I can declare that all civil servants have received their pay,” he said.
