Airtel Malawi plans to roll out a 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology for its network this year as one of its initial investments in the next 10 years of it’s license.

LTE is a 4G wireless communications standard developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project o provide up to 10 times the speed of 3G networks for mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks and wireless hotspots.

Malawi currently uses 3.75G technology. Airtel Managing Director Saulos Chilima said in an interview in Lilongwe that the company intends to re-invest in its network to ensure improved quality and coverage.

He said the introduction of 4G technology will give its customers “exciting experiences” in both data and voice calls.

“This is part our investment in the network in the next 10 years of our license,” said Chilima.

The company’s 15 year license period expires this year and Macra is expected to announce a renewal of the licence for another 10 years following a successful review of its operations
