Patient beat doctors – Police sorround area 25 health center

Lilongwe, Malawi: Patients at the referral health centre in area 25 in the Lilongwe have beaten Dr Mwasawe one of the five doctors based at the area 25 health center. Patients were angry that they were not getting the treatment quickly enough. The health centre is currently under police protection
Last night on the 24 March there was a burst water pipe in the clinic, it longer than expected to get the plumbers in and stop the leakage. This forced doctors to delay servicing patients. The squabble between patient and doctor is ongoing as we write this article. Currently nurses are being threatened by patients and some of them have locked themselves in the maternity wing at the clinic. The police are guarding the health center.
Area 25 health centre serves a wide area within Lilongwe, it covers area’s 49,25, kanengo , area 18, area 30 Dzenza, Buli, Guliver. It has a limited number of resources which include 5 doctors and 10 nurses. The nurse patient ratio is very wide which puts too much pressure on the staff. The OPD (Out of patient department) see nearly 400 patients per day, the maternity wing delivers nearly 400 per month.
Community leaders are angry with the incident as the fear repercussion from the medical profession within the clinic. The community at large are dependent on this referral clinic; the main hospital in Lilongwe is a few kilometres away. It will be a big blow to the community if the nurses and doctors declare that they don’t feel secure to work within the clinic.
