Youth’s in Blantyre have take advantage of the ongoing civil servants strike by looting shops. The youths mostly students are angry that the government is not helping their teachers. They were seen and heard chanting anti Joyce Banda songs. The students are angry that there is no one to teach them all teachers are on strike.

The chants turned violent as students started looting, the situation got worse in Zingwangwa and Chirimba Townships where the angry students smashed vehicles, and burnt used tyres.

A PUMA Fuel Station at Kudya was smashed and nearly set ablaze by the angry students from Zingwangwa Secondary and Primary Schools who were joined by scores of other onlookers. Shoppers were shocked when they saw a group of people rushing into the shops. Some managed to get away unhurt however a few were injured.

The fuel station’s shop was smashed and all the merchandises were swept clean as fuel attendants and security guards were unable to restrain the angry youths.

The crowd also damaged an Auto Teller Machine belonging to NBS before police arrived at the scene and fired teargas to disperse the crowd.

Hundreds of students clad in their different school uniforms shouted enraged slogans calling on President Banda to resign for failing to run the country.

The violent students also blocked the M1 road but were suppressed after marching for some kilometers by the anti-riot police who started unleashing of teargas at them.

President Joyce Banda has managed to run away from the problems by a private chattered aeroplane. On departure she said it is more important for her to go to the summit than council the trip
