Fuel panic hits Zambia

In the recent past, Zambia has experienced erratic fuel supply but the situation has not reached levels where motorists have to start panicking. However, over the last weekend, there was an uneven supply of fuel to the extent that motorists started queuing up and this is raising concern that fuel supply may become erratic again.

According to Mr Zulu the energy minister, management at the Oil distribution center decided to temporarily shut down the pipeline after noticing a leakage and this led to shortfall in the supply chain.

Mr Zulu said “What causes the shortages many times is the tendency by some people to start panic-buying because they are worried that there will not be enough fuel to keep them going”. The Zambian government has urged its citizens not to panic buy as the the fuel blip was only temporary because of a leakage.

The Zambian government hopes the management of the oil distribution center will in future ensure that it communicates its hiccups to other stakeholders so that they put necessary measures in place to avoid any disruptions in economic activity. In the past two days, many filling stations had run out of fuel and we hope this will not be repeated.
