Pandemonium broke loose at Chimbiya market in the central district of Dedza when minister of trade and industry John Bande in company of officials from Malawi Bureau of Standards made a surprise visit of the market.

According to State broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation MBC traders who are buying maize from farmers at the market run away from the officials in fear of having their scales confiscated because of their unworthiness.
Bande told MBC that government is committed to protect the interest of traders and consumers in the country to ensure fair trade.

“We are inspecting markets to ensure that traders are abiding to standards of trade. As government we are committed to protect consumers as well as promoting the interest of traders.” Said Bande.
Meanwhile the minister has warned all international investors to stop doing small scale businesses in rural trading centres.
He said all nationals should abide to the rules of trade.
