Malawi is ranked second from Sierra Leone in Africa as a country with highest number of maternal deaths.
“My government is determined to reduce the number of maternal and neonatal deaths in this country. I know that some deaths occurred because women had to walk long distances of ten or more kilometers in order to access health facilities.” said Mrs. Banda adding “as a government we are determined to change this situation and there by declare that no woman should die of maternal complications.”

President Banda has since ordered that no woman should give birth at Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA).
“I therefore order that Traditional Birth Attendants should no longer carry out anti natal services. Hence forth TBAs should act as referral points and all births should happen at a health facilities in attendance of trained health personnel.” She said. Her predecessor the former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika had also at one point in time banned Traditional Birth Attendants in a move to ensure that women deliver at health centres.
However the ban was lifted after it was discovered that women in some rural areas gave birth at TBAs because they could not access services from health facilities due to long distances or morbidity problems.

Commenting on the shortage of midwifery nurses in the country President Banda bemoaned the situation and promised to intervene.
“My government realizes the need to train more nurses to improve the nurse patient ratio in the country which is far from the recommended ratio. I therefore would assist with school fees to fifty nurses.” She said.

Meanwhile President Banda has called upon organizations and companies to support the presidential initiative on safe motherhood and maternal health.
“Let me commend companies like Standard bank that has come in to assist in the presidential initiative for maternal health. We need more of such support. Let us join hands in this drive to support our mothers.” She said.

Mrs. Banda also urged local leaders to assist government in improving maternal situation in the country.
She said chiefs play a crucial role in ensuring that women deliver at health centres.President Banda launched her presidential initiative on maternal health in Blantyre at the grace of Traditional leaders just few days into her office in April 2012.She ascended into power on April 7 following the death of her predecessor the former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika. Mutharika died of a cardiac arrest on April 5.
